2009Apr17 1 New Brunswick hosts aquaculture summit FREDERICTON (CNB) – Leaders from the province’s aquaculture industry will meet in Fredericton for a two-day summit on April 16 and 17, Agriculture and Aquaculture Minister Ronald Ouellette announced today.

“The theme for this summit is: Be a partner on the road to self-sufficiency,” said Ouellette. “It reflects our desire to have industry stakeholders sitting at the table with us, developing the priorities that will enable the aquaculture sector to make a contribution toward the province achieving self-sufficiency by 2026.”

Ouellette held a series of pre-consultation sessions across the province in February, seeking input from industry stakeholders on which topics should be considered priority topics of discussion.

The summit will be co-chaired by Ouellette and federal Fisheries and Oceans Minister Gail Shea.

“The New Brunswick aquaculture industry has tremendous potential, and offers valuable and vital job opportunities for many people,” said Shea. “I believe that our collaboration at this summit will help ensure the continued success of this industry for years to come.”

In 2007, the value of aquaculture production in New Brunswick was estimated to be more than $348 million, with farm-gate revenues of about $278 million.
