NWT Considers Professional Licensing Legislation

Public consultation for Health and Social Services (Umbrella) Professions Legislation

The Department of Health and Social Services is currently working on developing professional licensing legislation that could include a number of health and social services professions under one Act (often referred to as ‘umbrella’ legislation).

Through work with an Advisory Committee, consisting of representatives of four identified professions (licensed practical nurses, chiropractors, emergency medical service providers, and psychologists), a Health and Social Services Professions Legislation Discussion Paper was developed to help us determine what a proposed Act could look like in the Northwest Territories. While these four professions will be the first to be addressed under the new Act, the legislation may affect a number of unregulated health and social services professions should it move forward. As such, the Department is pleased to share the Discussion Paper and encourages both health and social services professionals and the general public to provide comments on the project.

All feedback is welcome and may be submitted by Sunday, May 1st, 2011.
