New Alberta tobacco tax legislation increases penalties and fines to deter illegal activities

Edmonton…
The Alberta government has introduced new legislation to strengthen penalties and fines for infractions of tobacco laws and allow for more effective enforcement.

If passed, the Alberta Tobacco Tax Amendment Act, 2009, will allow authorities broader powers to seize assets such as vehicles.  For the first time, it would allow for seizure of the debtor’s share of a joint bank account.  The proposed legislation also doubles fines and triples civil penalties for unlawful possession or sale of tax free tobacco, or tobacco on which tax has not been paid.
